Residency in General Surgery at Northwell Health

Residency in General Surgery at Northwell Health

Program director's welcome letter

At the core of the surgical services offered at Northwell Health is optimal patient care and outstanding medical education. The two are inextricably linked. By offering graduate medical education to future physicians we are also offering patients a higher quality of care. The general surgery residency program at Northwell Health is committing committed to offering that high quality of patient care by investing in the next generation of surgeons.

The two major teaching hospitals comprising the bulk of the in patient training: North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (with co-located Cohen Children’s Medical Center) provide over 1700 hospital beds and thousands of in-patient and outpatient procedures annually. The breadth and volume of experience for the surgical trainee is remarkable.

Residents interested in pioneering the next frontier of research and education are encouraged to participate in surgical research studies at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. This free-standing research facility is nationally recognized for the clinical and laboratory work in areas such as bioelectronic medicine and autologous islet cell transplantation. As part of one of the largest healthcare systems in the country, our residents have access to a diverse case load, unique educational and research opportunities and robust post-graduate training opportunities.

Northwell Health also has a one-of-a-kind corporate university – the Center for Learning and Innovation, which is dedicated to helping physicians and staff develop the knowledge and skills necessary to improve care in an ever-changing health care market. The center includes a simulation program and hosts annual SimWARS for residents to get hands-on training in emergency care.

In 2011, North Shore-LIJ partnered with Hofstra University to open the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine – recently renamed the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell – the first allopathic medical school created in New York State in more than 35 years. All full-time attending physicians in the surgical department are also professors at the medical school. This year we graduated our first class in one of the most innovative medical programs in the country.

Healthcare is changing. We are in an era of continual advancements in the field. Northwell Health is at the forefront of these changes and is committed to developing the skills and talent of our future healthcare leaders.

Program facts

Northwell Health is a system of 22 hospitals spread across New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. The system maintains 120 residency and fellowship programs – including three ACGME-approved general surgical residencies. Additionally, the health system offers comprehensive post-graduate training opportunities in colorectal surgery, vascular surgery, critical care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric surgery.

Residents in the general surgery program at Northwell Health have a unique opportunity to experience providing surgical care for an extremely diverse patient population. The residency program is split among two tertiary hospitals – Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital, as well as a dedicated pediatric hospital – Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Both tertiary hospitals have new women’s hospitals to offer comprehensive surgical care to women throughout their life cycle.

Residents also get to rotate through our ambulatory surgery centers, including the Center for Advanced Medicine, which offers complex oncologic care. Residents also train in the surgical simulation program at the Bioskills Education Center which has a robust faculty led cadaver skills curriculum.
