Residency in Dermatology at Northwell Health

Residency in Dermatology at Northwell Health

About us

Over the three year training period, our residents gain experience in general adult and pediatric, medical dermatology, procedural dermatology and dermatopathology via a patient base comprised of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and disease burdens. Our full-time faculty provides expert instruction in virtually all subspecialty areas within dermatology.

The clinical training experience at Northwell Health emphasizes a newly implemented continuity-based training structure, which is resident-centered with the hope of enhancing the trainee’s experience and depth of training with respect to patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, systems-based practice, interpersonal and communications skills, and professionalism.

The program aims to incorporate care of patients over the continuum of disease, which will facilitate achievement in milestones necessary for the independent practice of dermatology upon completion of training. Development of special interests and expertise during residency within requirements of the American Board of Dermatology will also be encouraged.

In general, training is provided through daily supervised clinical and elective experiences, monthly clinical grand rounds, as well as a structured core curriculum supplemented with journal club, Kodachrome sessions, morbidity and mortality discussions, evidence-based sessions along with clinical and scientific conferences with other regional residency programs. The trainee’s experience is further enhanced through occasional participation in individualized research experiences.

In the coming years, the Department also aims to support accredited fellowship training programs in pediatric dermatology, procedural dermatology and dermatopathology, which will serve to further enhance the trainee’s experience.

Our primary training site is based at our new state-of-the-art facility, which houses and supports our clinical, training, education, research and administrative efforts. Residents also have the training experience associated with active inpatient consultation services at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and the free standing Cohen’s Children’s Hospital.

Our ideal candidate is a highly competent, intellectually curious, compassionate and dedicated physician who will make substantial contributions to the field of dermatology.
