Resident life

The Internal Medicine residency program “lives” in central Queens, striking a perfect balance between city and suburban. The campus is located less than 10 miles from Times Square, an easy ride by car or subway, and a 20-minute car ride away from two airports.

We are surrounded by city life complete with the recreational opportunities, shopping and fine dining. Queens also has great parks, including the famous Flushing Meadow Corona Park, which holds the Annual United States Tennis Association (USTA) event every September, and the new CitiField Stadium, the home of the New York Mets.

We strongly believe that collegiality enhances training effectiveness, so our program is infused with activities and strategies that actively support connections among trainees.

Mentoring program

All residents are paired with a core faculty member as part of our mentoring program.  The goal is to facilitate  individualized early career planning, an exploration of interests and personal development from the time of acceptance into residency. Residents meet with their mentor at least four times per year with additional meetings at the discretion of the mentor-mentee pair. The relationship and issues discussed at these meetings are considered confidential.

The availability of a support system is reinforced with each resident with a mentor that has both a strong personal and professional connection with them. Every intern is also assigned to a peer mentor as part of our Big Sister, Big Brother Program prior to the start of the year. The goal is to provide a peer support group to navigate  the excitement, challenges, and anxiety that can be inherent during residency training while  simultaneously enhancing a sense of community within the residency program.
