Northwell participates in the National Resident Matching Program (the Match) solely through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), a service of AAMC (American Association of Medical Colleges).

As you’ll see on ERAS, your application must include medical school transcript, personal statement, and curriculum vitae, in addition to three letters of reference no more than six months old including one from your dean. All application materials and supporting documents must be forwarded to us by your dean’s office via ERAS online. We are listed with ERAS as Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine Program.

There is no minimum USMLE score requirement. While USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of application, depending on the applicant’s medical school they may be required for graduation.

Applications are accepted from medical graduates who have graduated from medical school within the last three years.

The department is committed to increasing the number of underrepresented minority residents trained in internal medicine.

Applicants selected for an interview are contacted by email. Interviews take place from October through January.

36 Categorical PGY1s, 22 Preliminary PGY1s, 36 PGY2s, and 36 PGY3s.

What is your application deadline?
January 1st. We start reviewing applications on September 15th.

What are my chances of getting into the program?
The Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine Residency Program in Internal Medicine is a competitive program. We receive approximately 4000 applications for our 36 PGY-1 positions in our categorical program and 22 positions in our preliminary program. We are unable to determine a candidate's "chances" of getting in the program. Only completed applications with required supporting documents will be reviewed and evaluated by the selection committee

What are your USMLE score requirements?
There are no minimum USMLE score requirements for application to the program. Candidates must have passed the USMLE Step 1 on the first attempt.

Does your program require passing USMLE Step 2?
Applicants must pass Step 2 prior to graduating medical school and starting residency.

Do you accept applications from international medical graduates (IMGs); also sometimes referred to as foreign medical graduates (FMGs)?

Yes, we sponsor H1B and J1 visas.

When do interns start?
Rotations begin on June 25th. There will be a formal orientation over the several days beforehand, about which you’ll receive more information after the match.
