Consisting of 19 faculty members, a dynamic mix of younger and more seasoned men and women, who were all selected for their outstanding teaching abilities, the faculty are dedicated to enriching a fellow-centric teaching environment. The program is always focused on education; promoting innovative and flexible approaches to learning. All faculty are trained to ensure that teaching is individualized, promoting progressive independence in a nurturing, supportive environment. In two leading tertiary care hospitals – North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (located only five miles apart), a state-of-the-art ambulatory practice and transplantation facilities, fellows are exposed to the broad spectrum of kidney diseases. Among the faculty are world-renowned experts in chronic kidney disease, glomerular diseases, ICU nephrology, cardiac nephrology, women’s health in nephrology, onconephrology, and many other subjects.
Fellows are trained in state-of-the-art technology, such as hand-held ultrasound, offered at only a handful of training programs in the nation. And new, in 2017, focus tracks leading to specific certificates of expertise, achievable within the traditional two-year fellowship. Finally, our fellows benefit from outstanding employment opportunities thanks to the 174 nephrologists practicing at Northwell Health facilities, the large number of nephrologists involved with Northwell joint business ventures and our extensive relationships in the work of academic nephrology.
Less than a decade old, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell (formerly Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine) has already received accolades as one of the most innovative training centers in the country. Fellows rotate at two of the health system’s hospitals, conveniently located near the Nassau-Queens border. Northwell Health is one of the largest health systems in the country, comprising 23 hospitals, more than 66,000 employees, and 4,000 employed physicians, and is world-renowned for its visionary and caring approach to health care. Strategic alliances with the Cleveland Clinic, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and others extend the system's reach further. A short walk from North Shore University Hospital is the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, one of the nation’s top biomedical research facilities. The scope, size, and diversity of the health system help to create a rich set of educational and employment opportunities.
The flagship fellowship of Northwell Health is located on Long Island, in Western Nassau County. Recreational opportunities abound, with abundant choices of parks and beaches. The cosmopolitan life awaits, with downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan only a half hour away by car or train. Great housing choices, excellent transportation, and rich cultural diversity create a dynamic place to study, work and live.
