Medical training is a period of rigorous development. Striking a balance between one’s personal and professional responsibilities is essential to success. We encourage residents to take advantage of the many free and low-cost events in New York City and Long Island, such as apple picking on Long Island or stopping by a street festival in the city.

The general psychiatry residency program also offers a variety of activities for residents to unwind and improve their experiences, including:

  • Intern Reception
  • Summer Barbecue
  • Fall Harvest Celebration
  • Fall Retreat
  • Winter Holiday Party
  • January Bowling Night
  • Movie Nights
  • Spring Weekend Retreat
  • Annual Department Dinner Dance
  • Graduation

On-campus housing—utilities and parking included—is available at North Shore University Hospital, Zucker Hillside/LIJ Medical Center and Glen Cove Hospital at a below market rate. The housing is spacious and well maintained, highly subsidized and typically available to all interested applicants.

For residents with school-aged children, the North Shore housing is located in one of the nation’s highest rated school districts and with the best teachers in the state of New York. Off campus options include vibrant urban neighborhoods of Queens (such as Astoria and Forest Hills), Brooklyn (such as Park Slope, Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights), and even Manhattan, as well as the more suburban neighborhoods of Long Island and Westchester (which feature some of the best public school districts in the country).
