Medical training is a period of rigorous development. Striking a balance between your personal and professional responsibilities is essential to your success. We encourage residents to take advantage of the many free and low-cost events in New York City and Long Island, such as apple picking on Long Island or stop by a street festival in the city

Housing, salary & benefits

Housing is not available to Northwell Health fellows. There are many services to assist in finding apartments around your training hospital, including Street Easy, Curbed, and Trulia.

Members of the house staff have a choice of plans under medical, dental, vision, supplemental short-term disability, long-term disability, supplemental life insurance/accidental death and dismemberment, and flexible spending accounts. All plans are eligible on the first date of employment, and the cost of coverage is largely employer-subsidized. In addition, the following are provided to members of the house staff:

  • Employer-paid Basic Life Insurance/AD&D at 1½ times pay up to $500,000
  • Salary continuation during disability for up to 12 weeks and 50 percent Short-Term Disability thereafter at no cost to the employee
