The Family Medicine Residency Program's goal is to train compassionate, competent and caring family physicians who will progressively expand their competencies throughout the program to the point where, upon graduation, they will be successful in the American Board of Family Medicine certification process and obtain a level of ability whereby we, the faculty, could confidently call upon them to care for ourselves and our families. Moreover our graduates will successfully completed personal preparation for the tasks of lifelong learning and service to their community.

An independent clinical department at Glen Cove Hospital for more than 40 years the DOFM numbers over 40 board certified physicians with over 20 being graduates   of the Glen Cove FMRP. Many members are part of the fulltime or voluntary faculty and participate enthusiastically in the educational experience received in our residency program. Graduates of our program include two past presidents of the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, three Program Directors, two prior Medical Directors and two past presidents of the Medical Staff.

Family physicians and residents serve on every Glen Cove Hospital committee and chair many of them. Senior members of our department participated in the formation of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and continue to serve as “core faculty”in the training and evaluation of SOM students. The Department of Family Medicine of Glen Cove Hospital is fully integrated with the Departments of Family Medicine at both System and School of Medicine levels with three of its members included in their Executive Committee.

The showpiece of the DOFM is the Family Medicine Residency Program. Begun in 1973 as one of the first such programs in the region, it has graduated over 230 family physicians many of who practice in the Long Island area. The residency program has maintained continuous full accreditation by the ACGME since its inception and is structured as a 7-7-7, unopposed, community based university affiliated program.

The Glen Cove Hospital Family Medicine Residency program offers its residents the best of both worlds with its community roots and its warm and friendly atmosphere combined with totally modern facilities and the immediate availability of the tertiary care facilities of the Northwell Health just minutes away.

The educational program is centered at the Glen Cove Campus with Huntington Hospital utilized for most initial inpatient rotations. The Family Medicine Center (FMC) is the site of our Level III Patient Centered Medical Home and is connected to the hospital by an enclosed passageway. It consists of 18 examination rooms, a spacious waiting room, a procedure room, a colposcopy room, an electronic library, a classroom and faculty and staff offices.

The FMC boasts a modern EMR and internet connectivity to a variety of medical search engines. It is staffed with registered nurses, nurses’ aides, case managers, social workers, behavioral health professionals and an experienced secretarial staff with a long history of working with resident physicians. Approximately 13,000 patient visits occur annually with an additional 6,000 performed by full-time faculty using the facilities as both preceptors and role models for the resident physicians.

Specialty clinics exclusively for Family Medicine Center patients are conducted by board certified subspecialists in Dermatology, Cardiology, ENT, Nephrology, Neurology, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Podiatry and Urology. Office hours are precepted by the full-time faculty with a maximum resident /faculty ratio of 1:4. Salaried Obstetrical and Pediatric Faculty compliment the Family Physician faculty in the FMC, as do members of the voluntary medical staff. Over 50 voluntary faculty from all major specialties contribute their talents toward the education of our residents while serving as preceptors during specialty rotations.

The FMC serves as an educational site for many medical students allowing the residents themselves to become teachers.
