Striking a balance between our professional and personal lives is essential to success as a physician. Our program leadership, faculty and staff see the work/life balance as an important, yet often neglected area of training. We encourage fellows to take advantage of the many free and low cost events in New York City and Long Island.  

Housing, salary & benefits

Housing is not available to Northwell Health fellows. There are many services to assist in finding apartments around your training hospital, including Street Easy, Curbed, and Trulia.


We offer one of the most competitive benefits program in the nation. Members of the house staff have a choice of plans under medical, dental, vision, supplemental short-term disability, long-term disability, supplemental life insurance/accidental death and dismemberment, and flexible spending accounts. All plans are eligible on the first date of employment, and the cost of coverage is largely employer-subsidized. In addition, the following are provided to members of the house staff:

  • Employer-paid Basic Life Insurance/AD&D at 1½ times pay up to $500,000
  • Salary continuation during disability for up to 12 weeks and 50 percent Short-Term Disability thereafter at no cost to the employee
  • 60 percent Long-Term Disability provided at no cost to the employee

Members of the house staff are entitled to 20 days of paid time off (PTO) each contract year. These 20 days must be used during the period covered by the contract and may not be carried into subsequent years. To learn more about benefits offered, download our resident resource guide.


Northwell Health salaries are among the highest in the nation.  For the 2016-2017 academic cycle, the salaries for residents are:

Living in the New York-metro area is expensive. In considering a move to New York City it is important to weigh the cost of living against the many educational and cultural advantages of living here. You may incur additional expenses that are not covered, such as the purchase of a computer, medical expenses not covered by insurance or conference expenses.
