About us

The continuing medical education the health system provides to physicians and healthcare professionals is a fundamental asset to the maintenance of quality and patient safety. Northwell Health is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Programs accredited by the ACCME certify educational activities for category 1 credit of the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award, which state licensing and medical specialty boards use to re-license and recertify physicians.

The Office of Continuing Medical Education at Northwell Health serves a diverse healthcare community, including:

  • Physicians within Northwell Health
  • Other physicians in the Long Island and greater metropolitan New York City region
  • Physicians from the United States and other countries in the world
  • Other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team

Accreditation with Commendation

In December 2013, North Shore-LIJ Health System (now Northwell Health) was again awarded “Accreditation with Commendation" as a provider of Continuing Medical Education by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. This is the second time that CME has achieved this distinction, establishing the program in the top tier of all CME providers including some of the nation’s most prestigious medical schools.

The Accreditation with Commendation award status grants Northwell Health a six year accreditation (the maximum possible) and positions it among the top providers of continuing medical education in the United States. To be considered Exemplary, a program must go well beyond simply meeting the basic requirements by showing innovation and creativity in addressing the components that make up the ACCME’s Essential areas and Standards. This ranks Northwell Health in the top 8 percent of all providers of CME in the nation and places it among those medical institutions in the US that have demonstrated the highest levels of educational acumen.
