Chief Resident Education Program
The chief resident role is the first official opportunity for physician leadership within the clinical setting. Chief residents serve as key leaders for the program and are selected for their exceptional clinical and leadership skills. They provide leadership and support of the key missions of their residency program and function as key mentors and advocates for their residents.
Chief residents learn the foundational skill sets associated with leading, managing and mentoring. The first course is a full day session which includes classroom activities with half of the day spent in the Clinical Skills Lab performing several leadership based simulations. The Chief residents are provided with 3 other opportunities to attend “follow up” sessions throughout the year, so that we can hone specific skills such as conflict resolution, cognitive overload and role transition.
Through an interactive experience, the Chief Resident Education Program is designed to provide a foundational skill set of leading, managing and mentoring through a formal learning environment.
