“Big Al” puts his heart into his music—we put ours into caring for him

Lenox Hill Heart and Lung helped this lifelong musician hit a new high note after an innovative TAVR procedure.

At 93 years old, Al Rando has spent decades delighting people with his uncanny musical ability, despite going blind at just five months old. But Al’s gift came to a halt when his heart condition left him barely able to walk, let alone play an instrument.

He turned to the heart and lung experts at Lenox Hill Hospital, who performed an innovative procedure called Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, or TAVR. Not only did the team save Al’s life—they got him back to playing the piano for appreciative crowds. “All I can say is thank you to everyone who put me back in business again,” says Al.

"Big Al" Rando, a talented pianist, received life changing heart care at Lenox Hill Heart and Lung.

Northwell Health care teams at Lenox Hill Hospital have been named an America's 100 best heart program 5 years in row, making us among the top 5 percent in the nation.
