Renowned brain aneurysm expert brings 33 years of experience

BAY SHORE, NY —

Southside Hospital has appointed David J. Chalif, MD, as chief of neurosurgery. In his new role, Dr. Chalif will be tasked with establishing a premier, multidisciplinary neurosurgery program.

Southside’s transformation from a community to tertiary hospital has been driven by the expansion of critical programs and services such as cardiac and trauma care. To further elevate the quality and level of care provided, the hospital is continuing to invest in neurosurgical programs and talent, led by Dr. Chalif.

“With over 33 years of surgical experience, Dr. Chalif is a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of complex cerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations and brain tumors,” said Raj K. Narayan, MD, Northwell Health’s senior vice president and executive director, neurosurgery services. “Under his leadership, Dr. Chalif helped recruit new attending physicians and played a fundamental role in the development of the hospital’s brain aneurysm program, leading to its current position as one of the busiest and most comprehensive cerebrovascular programs in the tristate area. I am confident that Dr. Chalif will replicate these achievements in establishing a top-notch neurosurgery program at Southside Hospital.”

Previously, Dr. Chalif served as Northwell Health’s chief of vascular neurosurgery. He founded and directed Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center – a cutting-edge program that includes microsurgery, neurointerventional radiology, fellowship training and neurointensive care.

About Dr. Chalif

An advocate for brain aneurysm awareness, Dr. Chalif has lobbied on Capitol Hill and met with members of Congress. Under Dr. Chalif’s stewardship, Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF) have served as co-hosts to hundreds of patients and their families every year at Northwell Health’s annual Long Island Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk, which is entering its 11th year and will take place September 21 at Jones Beach. To date, the event has raised more than $700,000 to help further brain aneurysm research.

Dr. Chalif is the recipient of the national BAF’s 2018 Physician Champion Award and is a member of their Medical Advisory Board. Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, Dr. Chalif is also a member of the numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the Cerebrovascular Section of the AANS/CNS.

“Having a nationally renowned neurosurgeon such as Dr. Chalif come to Southside Hospital to lead our neurosurgery program is such an honor,” said Donna Moravick, RN, NP, the hospital’s executive director. “We are committed to expanding our neuroscience program and have invested in the latest technologies to be able to diagnose and treat all neurological and neurosurgical conditions. In addition to recruiting Dr. Chalif, we have also hired three neuro-intensivists, as well as two endovascular neuro-interventionalists, which will allow us to provide our patients with the highest quality of cerebrovascular and neuro-endovascular care.”
