Syosset Hospital Orthopaedics Earns Gold Seal of Approval

The Center for Orthopaedic Excellence at Syosset Hospital has been re-certified for total hip replacements, total knee replacements and spine surgery by the Joint Commission. The hospital's orthopedic programs were first successfully certified in 2015 after only being in operation for one year.

The Joint Commission is the nation's oldest and largest independent accrediting body in health care. The organization reviews and evaluates disease specific programs every two years for certification. During the onsite review process, Syosset Hospital's compliance, standards and quality were assessed along with its consistency to put patient care first.

"The total joint and spine programs exemplify our collaboration of care to ensure our patients are prepared for the safe return to their homes following their surgical procedure," said Eugene Krauss, MD, director of the department of orthopaedics at Syosset Hospital. "Our multifaceted program focuses on optimizing the patient for surgery. We provide a comprehensive patient education program; collaboration with our nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and hospitalist team to ensure the patients progress through the postoperative period; partnering with our pain management department to develop patient specific treatment plans. Finally we have an extensive team of physical and occupational therapists that initiate the rehabilitation process to start the patient's on the path to an improved quality of life."

Joint Commission surveyors also encouraged Syosset Hospital to submit several elements of the program to the Learning Library to be shared as best practices, Dr. Krauss said.

"Achieving specialty certification from the Joint Commission in the three areas of: total hip replacements, total knee replacements and spine surgery is yet another example of Syosset Hospital's commitment to delivering excellence in patient care, in a safe and efficient manner," said Michael Fener, executive director of Syosset and Plainview hospitals.

The Center for Orthopaedic Excellence at Syosset Hospital offers state-of-the-art multidisciplinary orthopedic care including; spine care, joint replacement, sports medicine, foot, ankle, shoulder, elbow, hand and trauma and fractures.
