Susan Lee named chief of breast surgery at Forest Hills

Susan Lee, MD, has joined Northwell Health as chief of Breast Surgery at Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Forest Hills in Queens, and will also see patients in Riverhead and operate at nearby Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Dr. Lee is a breast fellowship-trained breast surgeon with 14 years of surgical experience, bringing a multidisciplinary perspective to treating breast cancer.

"Breast surgery is so much more than just surgery," said Dr. Lee. "Whenever someone does a breast fellowship it encompasses learning about other medical aspects of it, such as medical oncology, radiation oncology, oncoplastic and plastic surgery, pathology and radiology so you get exposure and training in all those areas."

Prior to Dr. Lee's joining Northwell, , she served as assistant director of Breast Health at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, where she practiced for four years.

From 2003 to 2014, Dr. Lee was a member of the surgical staff and served as acting director of the Breast Health Center at New York Presbyterian Queens. During this time, she was also an assistant professor of surgery in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Dr. Lee received her medical degree from the University of Illinois, and trained in general surgery for two years and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine. She went on to complete a fellowship in breast disease/breast surgery at Brown University School of Medicine/Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island.

Dr. Lee is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

In her new position at LIJ Forest Hills, Dr. Lee is looking forward to developing a comprehensive breast health program, including a high risk clinic, incorporating genetic counseling and testing for those patients with an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

"This is a field where the majority of the patients survive so you can really make a difference in somebody's life," said Dr. Lee.

In Queens, Dr. Lee will see patients at Northwell Health Physicians Partners Rego Park Multi-Specialty Practice Surgical Services, 95-25 Queens Boulevard, Rego Park, NY. Her office in Eastern Long Island is based at Northwell Health Physician Partners Urology and Surgery at Riverhead, 1267 East Main Street, Riverhead, NY. To schedule an appointment at either location, call 718-925-6294.
