STARS Rehabilitation opens at Ice Center at Eisenhower Park

Northwell Health today announced the opening of its STARS Rehabilitation Center inside the Northwell Health Ice Center at Eisenhower Park, a 4,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art sports physical therapy facility as part of an agreement that makes it the official physical therapy provider of the New York Islanders practice facility.

The 10-year agreement means STARS Rehabilitation Center's eight staff clinicians will be available to support the Islanders' medical team while also treating members of the community who are suffering with musculoskeletal or other sports injuries. The Ice Center houses more than 90 youth and adult hockey teams and competitive figure skaters. The STARS facility offers sports therapy, physical therapy, orthopedic rehab, back and spine care, joint replacement therapy, along with fracture and trauma care. The new space and equipment was developed at a cost of about $1 million.

"We are extremely excited to make our services available to the New York Islanders as it adds to our current sports partnerships, which includes Hofstra University, the New York Lizards Major League Lacrosse team and our growing relationships with area high school athletic programs," said Daniel Vaknin, MA, PT, vice president of Northwell Health's Outpatient Therapy Network. "This is one more step in establishing Northwell Health STARS Rehabilitation as a leader in sports and orthopedic outpatient therapy services."

The Northwell Health Ice Center, located within Eisenhower Park, features the latest in rehab technology, including a wearable sensor device known as the dorsaVi Movement Suite. This portable motion-capture technology helps therapists analyze human movement patterns to determine if deficits exist that could lead to further injury. By analyzing real-time empirical data that assesses patients' movement patterns physical therapists will more accurately be able to customize treatment programs and make adjustments accordingly. A recently published clinical trial showed patients who used the suite's low-back module were three times more likely to have their pain significantly reduced after 10 weeks.

"Hockey players are among the toughest athletes around, but they often need physical therapy and rehab to stay on the ice. So we are proud to offer our services to the Islanders and help their players recover from injuries," said Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. "While it is situated here in the Islanders practice facility, this program is open to anyone who needs sports rehab and therapy."

Northwell Health has 13 STARS locations and seven hospital-based outpatient locations throughout Long Island, NYC and Westchester County. STARS at Eisenhower Park is open Monday-Thursday, from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on Fridays. For an appointment, call 516-266-5700. For more information, go to:
