Renowned Neurosurgeon Henry H. Woo, MD, Joins Northwell Health


Henry H. Woo, MD, a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist, has joined the department of neurosurgery at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH). Dr. Woo will serve in numerous capacities as vice president of neurosurgery in Northwell Health's central region as well as vice chair of neurosurgery, director of cerebrovascular surgery and associate director of the neurosurgery residency program at NSUH.

Not only is Dr. Woo a highly regarded clinician, but is an innovator in the field as a medical device developer and has published about 65 peer-reviewed papers and has led or participated in over 50 clinical trials.

Narayan, MD, chair of the department of neurosurgery at NSUH and Long Island Jewish Medical Center and executive director of Northwell Health's Neuroscience Institute. "Dr. Woo's dual training will serve as an asset to our department in the treatment of brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and other cerebrovascular diseases, including acute stroke."

Dr. Woo most recently served at the Stony Brook University (SBU) School of Medicine as vice chair of the department of neurological surgery as well as director of the hospital's Cerebrovascular Center and neurocritical care unit. He also was a professor of neurological surgery and radiology at SBU.

Prior to joining SBU in 2007, Dr. Woo worked at the Cleveland Clinic's Cerebrovascular Center in Ohio for five years. While at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Woo earned the health system's Innovator Award for three consecutive years in recognition for his many medical inventions.

A graduate of Williams College, Dr. Woo earned his medical degree from the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in Manhattan graduating AOA in 1995. His post-graduate training included a residency in the department of neurosurgery and a fellowship in interventional neuroradiology in 2002, also at NYU.

Dr. Woo also is the founder and CEO of Vascular Simulations, LLC, whose work includes the development of the Vascular Replication Simulator®, which enables interventional neuroradiologists to practice an endovascular procedure with patient-specific anatomy and pathology prior to the actual treatment.

Dr. Woo is a member of prestigious organizations that include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the AANS/CNS section of cerebrovascular surgery. He has co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed literature. Dr. Woo has been repeatedly featured in New York Magazine's "Best Doctors" issue and Castle Connolly's "Top Doctors" for the New York Metro Area and Long Island.
