NEW HYDE PARK, NY —
Northwell Health's Michael J. Dowling has been named one of the Highest Rated CEOs of 2017 by the job site Glassdoor, which compiled employee feedback from thousands of companies on the job site to rank the top 100 CEOs. Mr. Dowling earned a Glassdoor Employees' Choice Award and debuted at No. 67 overall, fourth among health care executives nationally and the top Long Island business leader.
The Glassdoor list highlights top leaders who employees love working for in countries throughout North America and parts of Europe. Among US chief executives recognized by employees, Mr. Dowling received an impressive 91 percent approval rating based on the anonymous and voluntary reviews shared by Northwell Health employees on Glassdoor's website throughout the past year. That's compared with an average CEO approval rating of 67 percent among the 700,000 companies reviewed on Glassdoor.
"I'm honored to be recognized for my leadership by Northwell employees – my colleagues. The truth is employees at every level are truly the lifeblood of our health system," said Mr. Dowling. "Our health care professionals and the support teams that treat our patients at the most-vulnerable times of their lives require not only expert clinical skills but compassion as well."
When employees submit reviews about their company on Glassdoor, they are asked to rate various factors about their employment experience, including their overall satisfaction and other workplace attributes like senior management. As part of these ratings, employees are also asked to rate whether they approve, disapprove or are neutral about the job their CEO is doing.
"CEOs tell us the Glassdoor Employees' Choice Award is one of the highest honors they can receive because it truly reflects employee opinion about the job they do every day. I congratulate all of the winners on this significant honor," said Robert Hohman, Glassdoor co-founder and CEO. "We know that CEO approval ratings correlate to overall employee satisfaction and trust in senior leadership, which contributes to long-term employee engagement, ultimately helping an employer's recruiting and retention efforts."
Mr. Dowling joined Northwell Health in 1995 as executive vice president and chief operating officer after 12 years in New York State government, including serving as commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services. He was tapped to lead the health system as president and CEO in 2002 and has since grown Northwell to 22 hospitals, more than 550 outpatient facilities and over 62,000 employees. During his tenure as CEO, Mr. Dowling is credited with building the largest integrated health system in New York, developing the country's largest corporate university in the health care industry, the Center for Learning and Innovation, and helping to create a visionary approach to medical education highlighted by the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine, founded in 2008, New York State's first new allopathic medical school in 40 years.
Understanding that employee and patient satisfaction are inextricably linked, Mr. Dowling speaks to approximately 150 new hires from across the region at a weekly orientation program (called "Beginnings") for newly hired employees, sharing the organization's vision and expectations. He sets the tone for Northwell's culture of caring and accountability by remaining accessable and a regular at events throughout the health system.
"Those of us who work with Michael Dowling are clearly thrilled – but not necessarily surprised – by his selection as one of the nation's highest-rated CEOs," said Joseph Moscola, senior vice president and chief people officer at Northwell Health. "Given his long tenure with the organization, hands-on management style and approachable manner, Michael Dowling is revered by employees at all levels of the health system, as reinforced by Northwell's own employee satisfaction surveys."
