HUNTINGTON, NY —
Like expectant mothers who became pregnant in January, Huntington Hospital has been preparing for its expansion for the last nine months concluding with a ribbon cutting of its expanded Center for Mothers and Babies on Tuesday.
The Center for Mothers and Babies has 19 private rooms with en suite bathrooms complete with showers and a comfortable sleeper sofa for the significant other to rest in while caring for and bonding with his/her new family. The new layout, which features a 26-bassinet nursery at the center, was designed to optimize couplet care – the newborn rooming in with the mother throughout their hospital stay and having the same nurse care for both mother and baby.
On hand to commemorate the opening of the Center for Mothers and Babies were many of the hospital's labor and delivery and maternity staff, including nine-months-pregnant midwife Laura Jabbour, CNM.
"I'm excited to be one of the first women to deliver in this beautiful, state-of-the-art space and I'm also looking forward to returning from my maternity leave to deliver our newest neighbors in this new unit," Ms. Jabbour said.
Mothers and their families will also have opportunities to work with and learn from the Center for Mothers and Babies' bilingual lactation consultant. In addition to the renovated space, mothers are treated to a plush, spa-like robe and a celebratory filet mignon and lobster tail dinner with their significant other.
"I appreciate all of the hard work of those who have helped design and create this special place for our world-class obstetricians and midwives; Magnet-award-winning nurses; and maternity staff to provide a memorable experience for our community members as they welcome their new baby," said Gerard Brogan, Jr., MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital.
Listen to Mitchell Kramer, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Huntington, discuss the Center for Mothers and Babies on LI News Radio's Healthy Lifestyles.
