HUNTINGTON, NY —
Huntington Hospital Orthopaedic Surgeon Adam Bitterman, DO, recently performed the first total ankle replacement at the hospital.
A total ankle replacement is an option for people who have chronic arthritis pain in their ankle that has not been resolved through anti-inflammatory medications, steroids or another treatment. This procedure is able to alleviate the pain from arthritis in the ankle because it removes the arthritic bone in that area.
Similar to a total knee or hip replacement, a total ankle replacement involves metallic and plastic pieces that replace that joint. A total ankle replacement is an inpatient procedure that takes less than two hours of surgery followed by additional recovery time in the hospital.
"It's rewarding to provide people who have long suffered with ankle pain relief so they can get back to their everyday lives," said Dr. Bitterman, who is a Northwell Health Physician Partners Orthopaedic Institute doctor.
Gerard Brogan, Jr., MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital, said, "We are proud to have such an outstanding surgeon such as Dr. Bitterman who allows us to offer patients truly cutting edge orthopaedic care,"
Another alternative to relieve ankle pain is fusion surgery, which permanently joins bones in the ankle together.
After completing the standard orthopaedic surgery residency, Dr. Bitterman then did a specialized foot and ankle surgery fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
