Huntington Hospital adds lactation consultant, midwives

Huntington Hospital has added an additional certified lactation consultant and two more midwives to its team to further expand the gynecologic and obstetrical care options for women in Suffolk County.

Certified lactation consultants have been trained to assist women in meeting their breastfeeding goals. Huntington Hospital's newest lactation consultant is Maribel Garcia, IBCLC. Ms. Garcia has a bachelor's degree in nursing from Lehman College and gained her lactation consultant education through North Central Bronx Hospital. She is fluent in Spanish and available to personally help with latching and other breastfeeding tips as well as to provide help with breast pumps.

Midwives are licensed, independent health care practitioners who offer services to women from adolescence to menopause and through all of the stages of their lives, including pregnancy and childbirth. Midwives follow the practice guidelines set out by their professional organization, the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Huntington Hospital's two new midwives are Lindsay Price, CNM, and Jessica Hilsenroth, CNM. Ms. Price received her master of science degree in nurse midwifery from Yale University after her bachelor's degree in nursing from University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was previously a midwife at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and Community Health Network.

Ms. Hilsenroth received her master of science degree in nurse midwifery from Stony Brook University after she received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Tennessee. She was previously a midwife and nurse practitioner at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Ms. Price and Ms. Hilsenroth join the Huntington Hospital midwifery team which includes Michele Mayer, CNM, DNP, and Laura Jabbour, CNM. About 24 percent of the vaginal deliveries at Huntington Hospital in 2017 used the services of a midwife.

"It's important to us at Huntington Hospital to provide women with the most comprehensive ob/gyn health care as possible," said Gerard Brogan, Jr., MD, executive director of Huntington Hospital. "This is why we have invested in lactation consultants and our midwifery team in addition to our highly skilled ob/gyns, so women in Suffolk County have a truly comprehensive network to provide them with excellent care. This combined with our private rooms, full en suite baths and spa-like amenities create a truly remarkable birthing experience."
