HEMPSTEAD, NY —
The Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies recently celebrated the white coat ceremony of its third class of 51 nurse practitioner students who will transition to the clinical phase of their education this fall.
The students have completed the first of three years of Master's level advanced study, and will begin their clinical training at various Northwell Health hospitals and facilities in September. During the ceremony, they each received a white coat and pin as a symbol of their pledge to grow as compassionate healthcare professionals.
"The white coat marks the students' transition from learning in the classroom to training in actual healthcare settings as they begin their professional journeys," said Dean Kathleen Gallo, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, who welcomed students and guests to the event in the John Cranford Adams Playhouse on August 30. "Nurse practitioners make a commitment every day to provide empathetic, patient-centered care."
In May this year, the school graduated its inaugural class of 28 nurse practitioners who earned Master of Science degrees with a specialty in either adult-gerontology acute-care nursing or family nursing.
Since its launch in 2015, the School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant studies has expanded its courses of study to include a Master of Science degree in psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and an advanced certificate in registered nurse first assistant. During the 2018-19 year, it will introduce a new Master of Science in Cardiovascular Science and Perfusion Medicine in January, as well as advanced certificate programs in family nurse practitioner (fall) and adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (spring).
In addition to nursing, the school houses two programs in Physician Assistant Studies – a dual degree BS/MS program and a graduate program. The programs are designed to meet the increasing demand for qualified nurse practitioners and physician assistants to deliver community-based care.
