Crucial health issues on agenda as Japanese medical experts visit Staten Island

Aging populations, access to health care, costs and information management top the list of crucial issues being discussed September 27 by a 15-member delegation of visiting health care professionals affiliated with Japan's Private Medical University Association and health care officials at Staten Island University Hospital.

"Our hope is to compare and contrast Staten Island University Hospital services with ours in Japan and to share insights into services that better prepare us for the future," said Akiro Terado, the Japanese medical group's chairperson.
"This is actually a return visit. The group which sets out on a learning mission every two years, first met with us in 2008, and this is a perfect opportunity catch up on positive progress as we move forward," noted Donna Proske, SIUH executive director. "Serious, unavoidable issues, such as an increase in aging populations – Japan has the world's largest population of older adults -- and illnesses impacting health in our communities are mutual concerns," she said.
Some of the issues for discussion are:
  • How to reach out efficient medical care planning for the community;
  • How to control the mega-volume of data on computer daily;
  • What is actual condition of collaboration with industries and universities;
  • How accessible or inaccessible for foreign patients to hospital (with or without proper health insurance, and more.
