15 Northwell hospitals recognized for outstanding stroke care

NEW HYDE PARK, NY —

Fifteen Northwell Health hospitals have earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The designation recognizes hospitals for their commitment to ensuring patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

Receiving the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award are: Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Forest Hills, Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Valley Stream, Mather Hospital, North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), Northern Westchester Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Phelps Hospital, Plainview Hospital, Southside Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) and Syosset Hospital. Each met specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. The measures included the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

"The Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Awards demonstrates that our highly trained physicians and nurses throughout Northwell Health are committed to providing care that has been clinically proven to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients and save lives," said Souhel Najjar, MD, senior vice president and executive director of Northwell Health's neurology service line.

In addition to the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, Glen Cove, Lenox Hill, NSUH, Northern Westchester, Peconic Bay Medical Center, Phelps, Southside, SIUH and Syosset received "Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll" recognition. Huntington, Mather, LIJ Medical Center, LIJ Forest Hills, LIJ Valley Stream, and Plainview achieved "Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll" status. These awards recognize the quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient's arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

As New York State-designated stroke centers, the 15 Northwell Health hospitals have multidisciplinary stroke teams available 24 hours a day to assess and treat stroke patients.
