What is acute pain management?

Acute pain management assists patients with postoperative, post-traumatic and other types of acute pain that require specialized interventions, such as epidural analgesia, intravenous patient controlled analgesia (IVPCA) and continuous peripheral nerve blocks.

Why it’s done

The goal of acute pain management is to safely provide optimal pain management with a balance of pain relief techniques and treatment of side effects.

Our approach

At Northwell Health, our specialized team of clinicians for the acute pain management service includes a board-certified anesthesiologist, a pain management-certified nurse practitioner and registered nurses with training in pain management. Our skilled professionals have expertise in postoperative pain control and provide coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Patients receiving acute pain management services are visited daily, and more often if necessary, by an anesthesiologist and registered nurse who evaluate and adjust the doses of the medications with an emphasis on patient comfort and safety.
