Visualase Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT)
This technique allows patients who have brain tumors to be treated in a minimally invasive way, often under local anesthesia, and even if other treatments may have failed.
Visualase LITT works by delivering a highly concentrated amount of heat via a thread-thin laser into the tumor. Fiber optics (thin, flexible fibers of glass or other transparent solids that transmit light signals) are placed directly into the tumor to deliver the laser energy within the desired region of treatment, even within remote areas of the body.
North Shore University Hospital was the first site in the northeast to treat patients with brain tumors using the innovative Visualase laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) system.
