If you’ve been diagnosed with a skull base tumor, you may require surgery. To remove the tumor, a surgeon will perform a craniotomy, a surgical procedure that makes an opening in the skull bone to provide access to the brain.
There are several different kinds of craniotomies that your neurosurgery team at the Skull Base Center may use to reach the tumor or area requiring treatment. They will carefully remove and dissect the tumor away from the surrounding structures.
Intra-operative MRI scanning can provide real-time images throughout the brain tumor surgical treatment to help remove brain tumors safely and effectively. Surgery for skull base brain tumors may take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours, depending upon the type of tumor and type of operation.
