Polypectomy

Polypectomy is the removal of a small piece of bulging tissue (called a polyp) by surgery.

If a polyp contains cancer inside the rectum or colon, for example, it can be removed during a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy, procedures that use a long, flexible, lighted tube to access areas inside the rectum and colon. Polypectomies may also be performed in other areas of the body, including the nose, cervix and uterus.
