Resection and colostomy

Resection and colostomy

Resection (surgical removal of part of an organ or structure) and colostomy (surgical procedure where a piece of the colon is diverted to an artificial opening in the abdominal wall) are performed following a removal of a portion of the small intestine when the remaining parts of the intestine cannot be reattached, and an opening (stoma) is created for waste to pass through to the outside of the body. The stoma may be temporary while the intestine fully heals.
