Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

Shortness of breath, also known as dyspnea, is difficulty breathing or catching your breath. It can be mild and happen during light physical activity. It can also be severe enough to prevent walking, talking or eating. Shortness of breath can be very frightening to you and your loved ones.

Symptoms of shortness of breath (dyspnea)

Shortness of breath can be chronic in patients who have been living with lung disease for months or years. It can also be acute, developing suddenly as a complication of a serious disease. Many people who have shortness of breath describe the following symptoms:

  • Feeling deprived of air
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Rapid or labored breathing
  • Feelings of anxiety or panic because of the shortness of breath

Causes of shortness of breath (dyspnea)

Chronic dyspnea is usually related to an underlying illness. People who have shortness of breath often have one of the following conditions:

  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and other lung diseases
  • Chronic heart failure
  • Cancer, especially lung
  • Kidney disease
  • Advanced HIV/AIDS
  • Pneumonia
