Prone treatment for breast cancer
During this radiation therapy treatment, the body is placed in the prone position (lying on the stomach, rather than on the back).
For breast cancer treatment, this position takes advantage of the breast falling away from the heart and lungs. The increased distance between the breast and the heart and lungs makes it easier to protect these organs from radiation while delivering sufficient dose to the breast.
Northwell Health offers prone radiation therapy treatments for patients with early stage breast cancer. By utilizing body position to reduce the exposure of the lungs and heart to radiation, patients benefit from the reduction of the chances of damage to these organs.
