Overview

Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a medical specialty comprised of board-certified physiatrists (fi-zē-ˈa-trists). Physiatrists, or rehabilitation physicians, are nerve, muscle, and bone experts who treat injuries or illnesses that affect how people move.

The team of physiatrists at Northwell Health Rehabilitation Network has the highest level of specialty training to treat any disability resulting from disease, musculoskeletal injury or paralysis. They focus on the development of a comprehensive program for putting the pieces of patient’s lives back together after injury or disease without surgery. In order to develop a complete program for the patient, the physiatrists work with colleagues in other departments to collaborate on care, including:
