As one of the largest laboratory systems in the country, Northwell Health Labs offers patients a wide variety of laboratory testing procedures. Wait times are no longer than 15 minutes and there are no appointments necessary for routine testing procedures. Appointments are only necessary for time-sensitive tests such as glucose tolerance and platelet aggregation. If patients have questions about whether they are having time-sensitive tests conducted, they should call the Blood Testing Service Center directly.

Blood collection procedures are done at Northwell Health Labs Blood Testing Service Centers, which are conveniently located throughout New York City and Long Island. The team members at the blood testing service centers collect blood, urine and other body fluids and deliver these samples to Northwell Health Labs for testing.  With professionally trained phlebotomists (professionals trained to draw blood from a patient) and friendly support staff, Northwell Health Labs provides experienced service with accurate diagnostic results.

To better serve patients, Northwell Health Labs offers a clinical laboratory service directory. This directory provides helpful information about the range of services and detailed information for all tests offered by the labs. Patients can also find information regarding collection and labeling of specimens, hours of operation and billing policies in this directory.

Blood draw

Blood tests are used to diagnose and monitor treatment for a variety of conditions. Northwell Health Labs makes getting blood drawn easy with services at all Blood Testing Service Centers. Before visiting one of the conveniently located centers for blood drawing, patients should:

  • Call their physician or the Northwell Health lab location that they plan to visit to determine if tests ordered will require fasting or special preparation.
  • Be sure to bring a copy of their physician’s test requisition or prescription along with their insurance information or card.

A patient’s physician will receive a completed report from Northwell Health Labs when test results become available.

If a patient does not have their insurance card, the phlebotomists will still draw the patient’s blood. However, the patient will have to follow-up by faxing a copy of insurance information directly to the billing department at (516) 414-3825. Northwell Health Labs accepts all major insurances and also accepts payment via cash, check or credit card. To see if your insurance plan is accepted, view the insurance plan participation listing. Translation services are available in more than 180 languages. Ask the phlebotomist for assistance.

The experienced phlebotomists at Northwell Health Labs are also trained in pediatric care and will use calm and gentle techniques to make sure that children feel as comfortable as possible during a blood test. Ask for a copy of the Parent’s Guide for some helpful tips for parents and children.

Laboratory results

To receive a free copy of recent lab test results, patients can download the Authorization for Release of Health Information form and send the completed form to the Laboratory Services Center.

Results for some lab tests are also available to some patients through FollowMyHealth, the Northwell Health patient portal. Call (888) 670-9775 for patient portal questions/technical support.

Lab results can only be released to the patient or an authorized representative. Most tests take up to four days to complete, though some results may take longer. Patients can receive results by phone, email, U.S. mail, fax, or in person. Questions about test results should be directed to the patient’s physician.

Pathology Slide Release Request Instructions

Please complete the slide release authorization form and return to us via fax. Please call our office (516)304-7284 to confirm that we received and reviewed the release. 

The following information is required in order to process a slide request: 

  • Written consent form patient, including patient’s signature. 
  • Complete name, institution, address and telephone number of the doctor to whom the slides are being sent. 
  • Patient Information: Name, Date of Birth, Address and telephone number, Date of Procedure 

Slides and report will be sent via Fed Ex overnight to the physician. From the time we received the consent, with all the information, it takes up to 48 hours to process the request.
