The fellowship-trained orthopaedic trauma and fracture specialists at the Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute are committed to treating the most challenging injuries of the musculoskeletal system, including tendon and ligament tears, joint dislocations and bone breakages, infections and healing problems.
The trauma doctors have trained diligently in their specialty and are on the cutting edge of the latest research in this field, enabling them to offer comprehensive treatment plans to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
Northwell Health also has an after-effect treatment team of specialists who provide continued care to traumatic injury patients after initial treatment has been completed. From start to finish, the health system provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to treating orthopaedic trauma.
Northwell Health is home to two of eight American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified trauma centers in New York state: a level 1 trauma center at North Shore University Hospital and a level 2 trauma center at Southside Hospital.
An ACS-verified center designation means Northwell Health Orthopaedic Institute has verified the presence of the resources listed in Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient. This is a voluntary process and only those trauma centers that have successfully completed a verification visit are listed by the ACS.
What we treat
The orthopaedic trauma service is world-renowned for treating fractures of the upper extremities and lower extremities, pelvis, acetabulum and other bones and joints, as well as isolated fractures and dislocations, and poly-trauma. They also treat nonunions (fractures that don’t heal) and malunions (fractures that don’t heal in correct alignment), including cases requiring deformity correction.
With a multidisciplinary approach, the trauma specialists work together to provide the most comprehensive care.
The orthopaedic trauma doctors also employ a variety of non-surgical and rehabilitative techniques for each patient’s treatment.
Emergency Medical Services
Patients also access trauma services in hospital settings via transport from the Northwell Health’s Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS). CEMS is the largest hospital-based ambulance service in the New York metropolitan area and one of the largest in the United States.
CEMS is the only ambulance service in New York state to be duly accredited by the Commission on Accreditations of Ambulance Services (CAAS), and the National/International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE). CEMS has established and achieved a high standard of excellence at both the dispatch and communication levels affirmed by these certifications.
