Doppler ultrasound

Our approach

The OB/GYN team at Northwell Health is dedicated to getting to know you and your specific circumstances when making recommendations for care. If a member of our team is concerned about the growth rate of your baby, we will use Doppler ultrasound to ensure proper blood flow. You can always expect individualized care so you don’t have to worry about false positives and intervening with delivering early when it’s not needed.

Overview

Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive ultrasound technique that uses sound waves to assess circulation to ensure your baby is getting enough blood to sustain adequate growth. The treatment will take a closer look at the blood flow in various vessels, such as the uterine arteries, umbilical artery and fetal brain, depending on your individual needs. Doppler ultrasound can also be used to examine your baby’s heart and to detect conditions, such as fetal anemia.

This technique will tell our maternal fetal medicine specialists if you are at risk for certain types of complications, such as preeclampsia. It also helps our team determine a recommended time of delivery if your baby is not growing at a normal rate based on what the circulation looks like.

Reasons for treatment

Fetal growth restriction and checking your baby for anemia are the primary reasons our OB/GYN will recommend Doppler velocimetry.

What to expect after treatment

The timing of your delivery may change depending on the results. In addition, your doctor may require more frequent fetal monitoring to ensure proper care for you and your baby.
