Intravesical therapy is the process of providing treatment directly into a space – usually the bladder. A treatment offered for early-stage bladder cancers; the drug is applied to the bladder through a catheter, so they directly touch the affected cells and have minimally impact on healthy cells. The drug can be either:
- An immunotherapy drug, such as Bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG), that helps the immune system fight bladder cancer — this treatment is known as intravesical immunotherapy.
- A chemotherapy drug that is designed to kill the bladder cancer cells on the bladder lining — this treatment is known as intravesical chemotherapy.
