4-D radiotherapy is utilized to help treat any tumor that moves with a patient’s breathing, including lung and abdominal tumors. By taking scans of the tumor and tracking them, this technology allows the radiation oncologist to track any breathing-related movement that a tumor might have.
When the amount of movement is known by the physician and can then be tracked, then radiation treatment volumes can decrease in size, the dose may be more safely increased and the side effects may be decreased.
By utilizing 4-D radiotherapy, the physicians at Northwell Health can deliver radiation in minimized treatment volumes while decreasing the dose to normal organs. Patients will benefit from a decrease in side effects and the possible improved effectiveness of the treatment.
