We’ve all experienced head and neck pain caused by tight muscles, but sometimes muscles can become so knotted that they induce persistent pain that is difficult to manage and which may impair treatment by physical therapy, osteopathic manipulation or stretching. When this happens, your doctor may suggest trigger point injections. These injections of lidocaine, bupivacaine or other medications treat these tight muscles and help them relax. As the muscle relaxes, your pain should decrease either immediately or gradually. This outpatient treatment has limited side effects and has been utilized successfully for many years.
