Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Migraine headache pain can be frustrating to live with, and if you suffer from severe headaches, you have probably tried a number of treatment approaches and are always searching for new options. The usual medications prescribed may be ineffective or have intolerable side effects and you want a non-medication alternative.
One new treatment that is helpful for some patients who have frequent, severe migraine headache pain is called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This is a noninvasive treatment that uses a coil that produces a small magnetic field that directly stimulates your brain. During the procedure, the physician may test the device out with you in the office and demonstrate how it is used correctly. You won’t necessarily feel anything during this procedure but may experience immediate headache relief. This may also be used preventively. If you tolerate the treatment, the physician can help make arrangements for you to have the device at home to use either abortively or preventively.
