Preventative Therapy for Headache Treatment
Many headache sufferers are able to treat their headaches only with acute abortive medication. However, when the headaches are more impairing, more frequent, have other associated symptoms such as weakness or not responsive to acute treatments, then a preventive strategy needs to be considered. Fewer than half of the people that would benefit from preventive treatments ever receive one from their treating physician. Often, overuse of acute treatments without a preventive strategy can worsen the headache syndrome through medication overuse and rebound headaches.
Your physician may recommend a preventive strategy through the use of medications, injections, or behavioral management. This is done on an individual basis with a treatment plan personally tailored. Not all treatments work equally and it is important to work with your doctor to find the management strategy that works best for you.
