Neuromuscular Center

It can be unsettling when you experience symptoms such as numbness, pain, burning, tingling, muscle weakness or sensitivity to touch that indicate the possibility of a nerve or muscle disorder. Because there are more than 100 disorders that affect the nerves and muscles, it’s important to get a diagnostic evaluation and a comprehensive treatment plan. The first step is choosing the Neuromuscular Center at the Northwell Health Neuroscience Institute, which comprises a multidisciplinary team of numerous clinicians, including physicians, nurse practitioners, psychological care providers, and rehabilitation professionals.

Nerve and muscle disorders range in severity from Bell’s palsy, a form of temporary facial paralysis, to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a rapidly progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling the body’s voluntary muscles, to trigeminal neuralgia, a chronic pain condition affecting the trigeminal nerve in the face, and even many types of muscle diseases.  This is why we provide complete diagnostic evaluations that include MRIs, clinical assessments supplemented by neurophysiologic testing, appropriate blood tests and, occasionally, nerve or muscle biopsies or spinal taps. When needed, we bring in other specialists and can counsel and perform genetic testing for inherited nerve and muscle conditions.
