Neurodegenerative diseases increasingly impact numerous bodily functions over time such as balance, movement, speech, respiration, and the cardiac system. Though many of the diseases are genetic in origin, a variety of medical and/or environmental conditions may spur the onset. These can include alcoholism, cancer, or stroke, as well as external factors such as toxins, chemicals, or viruses. Still, in many cases, the cause remains unknown.
Neurodegenerative diseases include:
- Alzheimer's disease
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Friedreich's ataxia
- Huntington's disease
- Lewy body disease
- Parkinson's disease
- Spinal muscular atrophy
