Movement disorders are caused by abnormalities of the nervous system resulting in impaired or uncontrolled mobility, but may also be the result of autoimmune disease, infection, trauma, or may be a side effect of a specific medication. If the disorders are considered functional, they are not due to neurological disease. These include tremor, spasm, twitches, and some gait problems. Patients may present with temporary, chronic, or overlapping symptoms. Movement disorders which do not originate from neurological disease or damage include cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease. Prognosis and treatment vary with severity and type.
