Mononucleosis treatment

Mononucleosis treatment

Because infectious mononucleosis is rarely serious, you usually don’t need treatment. The infection can run its course within a few weeks.

During that time, your physician may recommend treatment options to relieve your symptoms, including:

  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for fever and pain
  • Plenty of rest and fluids, especially water
  • Warm salt-water gargles to relieve throat pain
  • Corticosteroids to reduce throat and tonsil pain and swelling
