Lumbar or cervical pain can range from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating. Your doctor will want to try a number of nonsurgical approaches to see if the inflammation that is causing the pain can be reduced.
If nonsurgical approaches are not helping you, your doctor may want you to have a lumbar/cervical discectomy. This is an open discectomy procedure that removes the disc that is located between the vertebrae in the spine. The herniated portion of the disc is removed, as well as any additional abnormal portion of the intervertebral disc.
Once the herniated portion has been removed, the nerve root that was affected can return to its normal position and orientation, reducing the pain that you feel.
