Limb-sparing surgery

Limb-sparing surgery

Surgery is the recommended treatment when bone cancer is caught early. At least 75 percent of these cancers can be successfully treated with a procedure called a wide excision, during which experienced surgeons carefully remove the tumor and just enough surrounding tissue to minimize the risk of the cancer returning.

After the surgeon removes the tumor, they restore the bone — either by safely and discretely taking small amounts of tissue and bone from elsewhere in the body or using a supplemental product (endoprosthesis) made of metal or other materials.

The patient may be treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both to shrink the tumor before limb-sparing surgery.
