Tetanus treatment

Tetanus is a life-threatening condition that requires hospitalization and immediate medical care. The infectious disease specialists may recommend one or more of the following treatment options depending on your condition:

  • Immediate treatment with an antitoxin, such as human tetanus immune globulin (TIG)
  • Wound care to clean the wound of any tetanus bacteria spores
  • Surgery if necessary to remove infected or dead tissue from the wound
  • Antibiotics to help fight the bacteria
  • Tetanus vaccine
  • Medications to control muscle spasms
