Parvovirus B19 treatment

Because parvovirus B19 is a viral infection, there is no cure. Parvovirus usually runs its course within 1 to 2 weeks. During that time, infectious disease physicians may recommend one or more of the following for symptom relief:

  • Plenty of rest and fluids, especially water
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen for fever, headache and joint pain and swelling
  • Antihistamine medications for itching

People who have complications may require medical care including:

  • Intravenous immunoglobin treatment to increase protective antibodies and contain the infection
  • Blood transfusions for people who have anemia
