Sestamibi scan

A sestamibi scan involves injecting a small amount of radioactive substance, called sestamibi, in a vein to find a problematic gland, in particular the thyroid and parathyroid gland.

The sestamibi is absorbed faster and takes longer to be washed away in a hyper functioning parathyroid gland than in a normally functioning one. A physician performs 3D imaging twice during the procedure, when the substance is injected and two hours later, to review absorption.
