Fetal Doppler ultrasound
There are several types of fetal ultrasound, each with specific advantages in certain situations. A Doppler ultrasound, for example, helps to study the movement of blood through the umbilical cord between the uterus and placenta.
Doppler ultrasound can determine if there are any problems within the veins and arteries. It allows ultrasound specialists to assess the blood flow in the umbilical cord and even in fetal organs, including the brain, kidney and aorta. Doppler ultrasound may be performed at the same time as a comprehensive ultrasound or biophysical profile. The information obtained is especially helpful in managing:
- Twin pregnancies
- Growth-restricted babies
- Babies at risk for anemia
- Babies of mothers with diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases
